Today is Independence Day in the US, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America.

The Declaration of Independence was signed by fifty six members of the Congress in the late afternoon of July 4th, when the Declaration was officially adopted. Of the thirteen colonies, nine voted in favour of the Declaration, two (Pennsylvania and South Carolina) voted no, Delaware was undecided and New York abstained.

The President of the Congress, John Hancock’s now iconic signature was signed with a great flourish so ‘King George can read that without spectacles!’

Today, the original copy of the Declaration is housed in the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and July 4th has been designated a national holiday.

Handsfree Group wish all their colleagues in the US office and all our customers across the country a ‘Happy July 4th’.
